Shikibutons

The Japanese traditional bed is called a Shikibuton, portable and easily stored. In western culture, we have adapted this eastern classic into a Folding Foam Bed. Shikibutons solve a lot of the problems with blow-up air mattresses, which offer poor back support and may rupture. The folding foam beds allow you to store any standard size mattress in a closet, and is a breeze to set up.

The standard folding foam bed is made from BioFlex foam, partially made from soy bean oil that has less off-gassing. A thick five inch version gives a firm support, while a three inch version is softer and takes up less storage space. Other construction methods include a top layer of cool gel memory foam, or organic cotton batting. Upgrade your guest or travel bedding with a shikibuton!

Folding Foam Beds

Welcome to the New Age of guest bedding, the Folding Foam Bed! (Also called Shikibutons). Forget about air beds and all the problems that come with them. Folding Foam Beds are durable, firm, light weight and easy to use. The foam used by The Futon Shop is derived from soy beans, and so has less off-gassing than regular foams. The folding covers are removable and washable, not to mention available in any color. The folding aspect allows for any standard sized mattress to be stored at 1/3 the space.

Folding foam beds negate most of the problems that come with air mattresses. They are more firm and give better back support, great for older guests. Foam has air flow through it, so it won’t feel sticky and sweaty like vinyl. Folding foam beds set up in about ten seconds, no waiting for a pump (or filling it with lung power). Since they come in any standard size, a Folding Foam Bed can sleep your visiting grandparents or be a quick bed option to keep in the trunk of your car!

Folding Foam Beds

A folding foam bed is also called a shikibuton. An ancient Japanese folding bed used under a cotton futon mattress when sleeping on the floor. In ancient Japan a futon was a combination of three ingredients: a shikibuton (folding bed) futon (cotton pad) kakibuton (comforter). These three components where often sold together as one unit. These futon units were taken out at night for sleep and stored away in the closet during the day.

The shikibuton or folding foam bed is now a staple in the American household and is used for extra sleeping surfaces that can be stored away during the day just like in ancient Japan. The folding foam beds come in many sizes and thickness with different filling ingredients for comfort levels that vary based on your needs. Folding foam beds are available in single or cot: size 27 x 75, twin 39 x 75, full/double 54 x 75, queen 60 x 80, Eastern king 76 x 80. The folding foam bed folds like an accordion into three parts on the width of the mattress. This folding sequence allows the folding foam bed to be neatly and compactly folded for storage.

The folding foam beds are manufactured in many fabrics for fun and playful use when not in storage. From black to purple from navy to royal blue you can find any color you need in these versatile folding foam beds. Some companies offer folding foam beds in custom sizes as well as custom fabric to design with. Folding foam beds can be filled with different materials to give different comfort levels and price points.

Foam folding beds should be made from soy-based foams. Soy-based foams are better for the environment than traditional all petro chemical poly-urethane foams. These foams are light weight contain no fire retardants which makes them a perfect match for the folding foam bed. Cotton and Foam folding beds are made from soy-based foams and cotton to offer a softer feel but heavier weight folding bed. These beds are fluffier and less square than a traditional folding foam bed. Gel is a cooling memory foam product and is also used in the manufacturing for folding foam beds. These are top of the line folding foam beds, still light weight and easily folded, they offer the maximum premium comfort.

So folding foam beds are perfect for camping, extra guests or just laying down and resting on the floor during the day. Flip and fold them away when not in use, easy storage folded or flat.
